NARAL Pro-Choice Texas on North Texas lawmakers who want to punish women for abortions
Austin, TX – According to a video from ReproAction, when asked if women should be punished for having an abortion, Congressman Ron Wright responded “absolutely.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Executive Director Aimee Arrambide issued the following statement:
Anti-abortion extremists like Congressman Wright and Representative Tony Tinderholt do not represent the values of North Texans.
Congressman Wright declaring that women should be punished for having abortions is not a hypothetical. During the most recent state legislative session, Rep. Tony Tinderholt (Arlington) filed HB 896, a bill that would have banned abortion and subjected women and their doctors to the death penalty. This bill is so extreme, it failed to receive a hearing in previous sessions.
North Texas legislator and Chairman of Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee Jeff Leach (Plano) gave this bill a hearing in his committee. If enacted, HB 896 would have been more extreme than the bans we’ve seen enacted in other states recently. When asked why Texas did not copy Alabama, Rep. Leach said that there wasn’t time but “Alabama is what we’ve been praying for…”.
A new Quinnipiac poll shows that the majority of Texans support abortion access. North Texans deserve better than anti-abortion extremists who want to punish women for having abortions.
